Mayhem, A Twisted Hearts Love Story Book 2, is a breathtaking book about second chances in life and learning to forgive yourself and move on from your past to love again.
The book opens with Dante getting ready to marry his pregnant high school sweetheart. Happier than he ever thought he could possibly be with his whole life ahead of him, tragedy strikes when his fiancé and unborn child are killed in a tragic accident on their way to the church. Unable to face the future or stay in the small town he grew up in, Dante joins the marines, and then becomes the right-hand man to a former mobster.
Cyma, has faced more heartache in her life than anyone should. Coming from a home with an abusive father and a mother who died young of cancer, she finds herself married to an abusive low life who leaves her and their daughter, Lelia, when he finds out the baby has leukemia. Having to be a string single parent, Cyma is forced to work two jobs to help keep the hospital bills and loan sharks at bay.
A chance encounter brings Dante into Cyma’s life when he saves her from being mugged. Dante feels an immediate connection with Cyma and begins pursuing her. Cyma, however is understandably wary of men and gives Dante a run for his money. Dante must not only prove his love and loyalty to Cyma, but overcome the grief that has ruled his life for the past ten years. Cyma must learn to trust others while also realizing her self-worth and learning to understand that she is worthy of both love and loyalty.
I found this story to be completely endearing. I fell in love with Dante immediately as he struggled to continue living when he truly felt all was lost at such a young age. His love for both Cyma and her daughter truly shines through and I enjoyed watching his journey towards redemption by allowing himself to love once again.
Cyma is an amazingly strong character who will do anything to give her young daughter a chance to live. I love that she wants to make her own way in life and not take handouts or the easy way out when offered. I identified with her need to take things slow, especially with her history of abusive relationships and abandonment from those she should have been able to lean on and trust.
Autumn Sand has done a great job creating this amazing cast of both lead and supporting characters. I loved her take on a former mob boss attempting to go legit and being trapped in between in some scenarios while trying to protect those he loves and that fall under his protection. This is a great book and I hope to read more in this series.
5 stars and the hope that there are more books to come – especially for Magnum!
