~Book Review~ “Protecting Kiera” by Susan Stoker

Life changed for Cooper Nelson the day an explosion caused sever hearing loss.  Having to leave the SEALs well before he planned to, Coop struggles to find his new place in the world.  When his former SEAL commander suggests he volunteer his time at a school for deaf children, Coop reluctantly agrees.

Kiera Hamilton grew up with a deaf mother, so working as a teacher with hearing impaired children was the perfect career choice for her.  Her class of first graders are eager to learn and quick to accept others who are different.  When Coop first appears to volunteer at the school, Kiera is smitten, however she feels Coop is much too young and attractive for her.  He, however, does not agree and pursues Kiera until she agrees to date.

With a whirlwind courtship underway, and time spent together at the school, Coop begins realizing that his life still has purpose  . . . especially when he begins connecting with a young boy in Kiera’s class who doubts his own self-worth.    Things are going perfectly, when a school abduction threatens to not only harm Coop’s school buddy but also steal Kiera from his life.  Will Coop’s days as a Navy SEAL have him saving the day, or will his hearing loss leave him at too great a disadvantage to rescue those he loves?

I immediately fell in love with Coop.  When we think about our military men and women getting injured in battle, hearing loss does not immediately come to mind and I love that Susan Stoker gave attention to this.  I also love that she showed Coop’s struggle with having to find his place as a civilian along with having to cope with his new reality of being hearing impaired.  Kiera is the perfect sassy and loving match for Coop.  She understand what he is going through, yet does not offer pity, but ways to help him learn to accommodate for his loss.

Even though this was novella length, it was a complete story with in depth characters and a plot full of adventure . . . . which is unexpected considering much of the action takes place at an elementary school!

Protecting Kiera was a great addition to Susan Stoker’s fabulous world of military heroes . . . fans and readers will not be disappointed.  5 stars!

This book is published through Kindle Worlds and includes characters from Elle James’ world.

Cooper Nelson’s SEAL career was cut drastically short when an explosion left him almost completely deaf. With so much of his pride and self-worth tied to the profession he loved above all else, Coop struggles in his nearly silent new world, his future seemingly bleak…until Commander Hurt badgers him into volunteering at the Riverton School for the Deaf. There, he meets teacher Kiera Hamilton, who opens his eyes—and his heart—to a love more fulfilling than any job could be.

Ten years his senior, Kiera can’t believe Coop would ever be interested in anything long term, but he patiently proves her wrong. And she’s not the only one enamored with the sexy former-SEAL—her impressionable first-grade students are enthralled with the man, especially Frankie. The troubled young boy flourishes with each of Cooper’s visits, which only makes Kiera fall harder.

As he learns ASL, connects with the students, and gets closer to Kiera, Coop’s happier than he’s ever been…until an attempted abduction at the school threatens to take away everything that makes his new life worth living.
