Today’s topic is Cozy Mysteries.
So, what exactly is a Cozy Mystery? According to Wikipedia, cozy mysteries “are a subgenre of crime fiction in which sex and violence are downplayed or treated humorously, and the crime and detection take place in a small, socially intimate community.”
I really struggled with this topic, because this is now my typical genre to read. If I am reading a mystery, it is usually a hard nosed detective story or serial killer thriller. However, I have one series that I have thoroughly enjoyed that definitely fits the bill!
Amanda M. Lee has an created an amazing series that mixes mystery with the paranormal with her Wicked Witches of the Midwest.
These books follow the Winchester women (all three generations) as they navigate their daily lives in Hemlock Cove . . . a small town that has re-branded itself to celebrate the paranormal to attract tourists. Of course, while most residents of the town think the paranormal re-branding was just a business decision, the Winchester women, all witches, know the truth.
I happened upon this series in Kindle Unlimited and fell in love. The Winchester women are smart, snarky, sassy, intelligent and loyal to one another to a fault at times. They also keep the men brave enough to love them on their toes. Each book has it’s own storyline and mystery that the family works to solve. The main characters are three cousins, Bay, Thistle and Clove. Their mom’s typically play a role in each book as well. Aunt Tillie makes up the final Winchester woman and is a character like none other ruling over her clan with her own brand of tough love, sarcasm, and a little bit of magic thrown into the mix.
The snark and sarcasm always makes for extremely fun an humorous dialogue and the situations the cousins find themselves, while at times very dangerous, are also full of comedic relief.
Along with the regular mysteries, Amanda M. Lee also has has short mysteries she releases in between her full length novels to tide eager readers over as well as fantasies that send the cousins into world’s and situations created by the devious mind of Aunt Tillie.
This link will take you to Amazon’s page for the main series. The entire series is also currently available on Kindle Unlimited for those that subscribe.
You can also check out the series on Amanda M. Lee’s website, which also includes a list of the shorts and fantasies as well as a suggested reading order based on timeline if merging all three types of books in the series together.
