~Blogger Bits~ Bookish Goals for 2018

Blogger Bits is a feature that myself and a group of fellow bloggers will be tackling twice a month. Topics will vary, but will always have something to do with the book or blogging world.

Today we’re tackling our Bookish Goals for 2018.  For me, this encompasses a few different facets of the book world for me.  First, I have some reading and reviewing goals.  Second, I have some goals for the blog itself.  And, lastly, I have some personal goals that I think will impact the first two.

Reading and Reviewing Goals

I’ve chosen to take on a few challenges to assist with meeting my reading and reviewing goals for 2018.  I also have a few others, so here goes.

1. 2018 Goodreads Reading Challenge

I am thrilled that I completed my 2017 Goodreads Reading Challenge by reading and reviewing 183 books – three more than my pledge of 180!  The reviewing part is a really important part of the challenge for me because I often sneak in a read that I don’t review . . . .which I really hope to get better at this year!

I am going for 180 books read and reviewed again this year – that is an average of 15 a month!

2. Mount TBR 2018 Reading Challenge (Hosted by My Reader’s Block)

We all have that TBR pile that seems to keep growing no matter how much we read.  And, I am a happy one-clicker.  I know I have some amazing books just waiting for me to pick up and read

My Goal for this challenge is to choose at least one book to read and review from the TBR pile that is already on my kindle each month. (Anything prior to a 2018 publication date).  This doesn’t seem like a lot, but with the number of arcs I tend to sign up for, this really could be a challenge for me!

3. 2018 Paranormal Reading Challenge (hosted by Whole Latte Ideas)

I’m pretty excited about this challenge because this used to be my favorite genre, and I have fallen away from it a bit.  I’m happy to have a reason to dive back in and review some of these amazing books!

My personal goal is 12 paranormal books read and reviewed this year. (My goal here is more reviewed than read – I tend to read them, but am terrible at following through on reviews since they are generally not arcs for new releases).

4.  Read and review at least one new to me author a month.

While not a challenge, this is a goal I have.  I tend to fall in love with authors and series and enjoy sticking with those tried and true favorites but want to star pushing out of my comfort zone more and read at least one new to me author each month.    This can be a random one-click, an arc or even a Quirky Blind Date with a Book (you choose from a tagline without seeing the title or author).

Blogging Goals

I love blogging and I want to improve what I am offering my followers.  I accepted one blogging challenge for 2018 and also have some general goals I am hoping to meet.

1. 2018 Book Blog Discussion Challenge  (hosted by Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction and Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight)

I really want to include more bookish content and not just promo / reviews on the blog this year, so I am hoping this challenge sparks my creativity and motivates me to pen a minimum of one discussion post each month.  These are not memes or warp ups, but something that may really spark a discussion.  Honestly, I am hoping to do better than one a month – I’d love to be able to say I more than doubled my original goal once December comes around!

2.  Increase my blog’s following.

It’s low right now (so low I am a bit embarrassed to share numbers) so I am hoping that more genuine content as well as visiting and interacting with more blogs may help bring a few new followers in my direction.

3.  Reach 3,000 Facebook followers as well as improve interactions on that platform.

There are days I feel like I post and no one sees anything let alone interacts.  This is especially disheartening for me with contests or original content posts.  With algorithms constantly changing, I think this is going to be more and more of a challenge for all bloggers on authors on Facebook and I’m not quite sure how to meet this goal yet, but I’m working on it!

Personal Bookish Goals

These goals tie in with some of my reading and blogging goals, but I feel are more about my personality and how I handle things.

1. Learn to say no.

I still get that little thrill every time an author or pa approaches me and says they found my blog and then asks me to read, review, promo, share etc.  I am learning that I can’t take all of these requests on.  It’s too much for me and too much for followers who are then inundated with constant promo.  I need to find and stick to books I really think I will love and be okay with telling an author that either I can’t meet their requested time frame or that the book is not one I would typically read.

it's OK to say NO

2. Enjoy reading and blogging.

I have always loved reading.  I always have a book in my hand.  It’s my go to activity for entertainment.  And, I need to remember that.  Reading and blogging are supposed to be fun.  It’s not a job.  I already work a full and a part time job as well as have a family.  This is a fantastic hobby, and if it starts to feel like too much work, I am doing something wrong.

I think a big part of this is taking on less promo and ultimately less arcs to read and review. (Oh how it hurts to say less arcs, but if I am trying to squeeze too many books in each month, I can’t slow down to really enjoy them).  Ultimately, less promo also gives me more time for fun posts such as memes, tags and original content as well.

So, there you have it, my Bookish Goals for 2018.  It truly is a lot to take on, but I am really hoping that taking the time to really think things out and organize will help me complete my challenges and reach my goals as well as take back some of the enjoyment in reading and blogging that I found slipping away.

Do you have any Bookish Goals or Challenges you have accepted for 2018?

Do you have any tips or advice for helping me meet my goals for the year?  I still feel pretty new to blogging and would love any and all advice.

Happy Reading!

  1. I also want to read more paranormal this year. I have the first seven novels in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward that I plan on reading this year. I love all your challenges and am really intrigued by the ‘2018 Book Blog Discussion Challenge’. I also want to start writing more creative posts instead of everything being Promo and Reviews. Great post!

  2. Great goals Jeannine! first I want to say I love your blog [I don;t think I had said it yet! :)] Try not to worry too much about the stats I think the entire blogosphere is suffering right now. All bloggers I know {even the giants] are complaining about their stats plummeting. I hope is just a down and we’ll all bounce back soon. 180 books!!! wow you go girl! Good luck in all your challenges!

    1. Daniela, thank you for the sweet words! What a lovely thing to wake up too! For stats, I just want to improve on last year . . . especially interaction and more original content . . . It’s in me, I just need to find a way to get it onto the page!

  3. 3000 on facebook, wow! For me, facebook is the deadest media. Somehow that’s the only social network where nothing happens for my blog xD but that’s alright. I’m more of a Twitter person, I think. I hope you do well on your blog, and I’m super impressed with your challenge numbers 🙂 I only did 107 last year and struggled!

    1. Evelina, I have followers on Facebook, but low interaction. And, right now, the new algorithm seems to be hiding everything . . .grrrrr!!!! I’d love to build up on here where things are more easily seen if people want to see them.

As for my challenge numbers, I’m pretty lucky that during quiet times at work, I can sneak in a bit of reading!

      Thank you for stopping by!

      1. For sure – I work for an ed tech company, so our busy times definitely come in cycles (beginning, middle and end of school year) so during quieter times, I can sneak in a chapter here and there!

  4. I don’t have tons of followers on the blog either so I’m not a master at giving advices but what I do want to do is enjoy blogging. It means resisting pressure and staying true to oneself. It means not burning uop while trying to work, take care of my family, read, write and follow my feed. It means being kind to myself and try my best. These are my own goals. Good luck with yours!

  5. Wow, I’m always in awe of bloggers who manage FB as a social media so effectively, I mean, 3000 followers? That’s massive! I’m sure you’ll go ahead from there. I’m taking up the Discussion challenge as well 😀 You’ve some amazing goals lined up for 2018 and I hope you accomplish all of them ❤

    1. Thanks, Fanna! I don’t know how effective I am on FB when post reach some weeks is dismal. I am really trying to figure out how to use those numbers for genuine interaction. Thanks for stopping by.

  6. Loving these goals for 2018. I started saying “no” in the middle of 2016 and it was the best thing ever for myself and my blog. I love to read and promote authors but the constant posting of promo post was overwhelming. I’ve also started turning down arcs as well. I want to read more of my own books. Every since I’ve made these small changes things have been better! I look forward to seeing you accomplish your goals!

    1. Arcs are my weakness and I so overbooked this month I feel like I am drowning. I am a very fast reader, but with a full time job and a family I took way too much on . . . This is something I really really really need to focus on so that I have time to stop and enjoy what I am reading rather than worrying about a review date.
