~Author Spotlight~ Summer Donnelly

The Spotlight is on Summer Donnelly today!

Summer has released a variety of series and short stories.

I’m really happy to be able to share a bit about Summer and her writing with you today!

What would you like your readers to know about you?

I want my readers to know that I’m an average mom with an amazing son and daughter who I’m devoted to. I’m sure I made a ton of mistakes raising them but somehow, they turned out to be amazing young adults. My kids are older and need me less, (but still text me at weird hours asking for things) and it’s given me time to pursue my lifelong passion.

I love being able to give life to stories and finally put down on paper all the words that have been swirling around in my head for so long. I’m a sucker for endings with happily ever after stories but even more so I love happily ever beginnings. The best stories begin at the first kiss, not end.

What inspires you to write?

Stories have been my companions for so long, I can’t remember a time when I didn’t create them. Either verbally or in writing.

As a child I had these convoluted plotlines involving whatever kind of doll I was playing with at that time – Dawn dolls, Barbies, Legos, or Weebles.

Is there a genre you feel drawn to write or do you see yourself tackling a variety of genres in the future?

My books straddle between women’s literature and romance. There is plenty of romance in my books, but I also like exploring other relationships. Brothers. Sisters. Parents. Children.

I have a universe in a town called Harper’s Mill, NJ. The town was settled by a coven of seven sister witches. The stories I weave are about their descendants living in modern day New Jersey. I’m in the process of writing a mini series set in 1920s Harper’s Mill that’s been a lot of fun, too.

My current projects are the Shifter Special Forces, an elite group of men and women who agreed to have their DNA spliced with animal DNA to produce a line of super soldiers. My stories take place in Maxwell Mountain, North Carolina and look at the lives and loves of the retired/ former soldiers.

Can you describe your writing space?

I’m surrounded by all my favorite things. I call it my nerd-seum. Snoopy, Doctor Who, The Walking Dead, Harry Potter, and gifts my kids made me when they were younger. Pictures of people I love. Even a few crystals scattered by my laptop for luck.

Can you tell us a bit about your writing process?

I have a great team of writers I work and publish with called Phoenix Prime. We meet twice a week to collectively brainstorm out ideas. From there, I outline my story and then I write it.

What is your go to snack when writing?

No snacks but bottomless gallons of Arizona diet green tea, please!

Are any of your books or characters based on personal experiences or people in your life?

Probably all of them! At least a little bit, right? What’s the saying? Be careful making friends of writers. Everything you say and do could become a plot point.

Do you have a favorite character or book you have written?

All of them? I learned something from each story.

But if I had to narrow it down I’d go with Willow Jones, the heroine of my first book Midnight Honey. Because she was my first, she has a special place in my heart.

My other favorite is Greer from my book The Three Wish Mermaid. She’s a mermaid so she has child-like awe about everything.

Any hints as to what readers can expect next?

I am currently working on the Shifter Special Forces. The back story for them is that the US Government figured out a way to splice human and animal DNA. They were able to build super soldiers who could shift into animal form.

Tell us about your Street Team and or Reader Group and let us know how interested readers can join.

My current ARC team is shared among other others. I’d love to have a team of my very own folks to see what’s working and where they’d like to see the stories go. Just send a request to my FB group (listed below) and let’s get started!

I feel like I’m all over the internet. You can’t miss me.

About Summer Donnelly

Summer Donnelly was raised in a rural area miles away from any urban centers. It wasn’t until she went away to college that she realized just how precious Small Town, USA was to her foundation.

Whether a magical universe in New Jersey or a close-knit foster family in North Carolina, Summer is devoted to spreading her love of small town life. The beauty and wealth of rural living is in the details — fresh food at the Farmer’s Market, Friday night football games, and playing in the marching band. Summer knows all towns have popular hang outs and other long-standing local traditions. She wants to pass her love of quiet living to her friends and readers by giving them a peek into the lives and loves of everyday people.

Summer once won an award for “most colorful” Halloween costume at her home town’s annual parade. After reading an article in a woman’s magazine, her mother put her in white tights while wearing a clear plastic bag full of colorful balloons. With a sign etched on her cheek reading “jelly beans 10¢.” As a result, Summer has a deep-seated fear of showing up places in costume.

Old buildings and their history both fascinate and inspire her. When she’s not writing, Summer is glued to watching shows about house renovations. She will moan in pain whenever a host suggests “ripping out those built-ins” and wonders if in twenty years people will complain about the lack of walls in houses.

A life-long reader, Summer quickly graduated from Beverly Cleary books and Trixie Belden Mysteries. She turned to teen romance and then the crazy-sauce covered romance novels of the 1980s that she borrowed from her grandmother’s bookshelf. She has been reading and writing romance from the moment she received her first library card.

She loves to watch 1940s romantic movies, badly sing-a-long to classic 1980s music, and read romance novels in her spare time. Summer believes in soul-mates, happily-ever-afters, and kisses that leave you breathless.

Pull up a seat as she cordially invites you to become a resident in her world.
